Our Story

So many backpackers ask me: How did you get to run a hostel in Tamarindo Costa Rica? I think I may have answered this question 100s of times and the story is super, super, super, simple….

I am originally from Slovakia – Eastern Europe, and I moved to USA in order to find my “American dream”. I worked hard, put myself through school, got my masters degree, got a car and house and bunch of other “stuff” that I no longer need, got a great carrier… and the dream??? Hmmm…I have realized that this is NOT what I really wanted…what I really wanted was to LIVE MY LIFE!

After having a successful carrier as a senior manager for one of the largest technology consulting companies in USA, I have realized that climbing the corporate ladder was just not ME! And after 10 years of a carrier in the industry I have decided enough is enough! I completed my last assignment in South Africa came home to Atlanta, GA, quit my job and within a week I packed my 2 suitcases, surf board and my cat Simba and moved to Costa Rica to run a hostel.

I have ran another hostel in Tamarindo for past 4 years where I took on a huge challenge and turned one of the worst hostels into one of the best hostels in Tamarindo Costa Rica. Needless to say after 4 years of success I have decided to part away from that place and open my own hostel, so I moved my management company to a beautiful new location, Pura Vida MINI Hostel in Tamarindo, Costa Rica (where we are today) much much closer to the beach, the surf, yoga, and night life.

I am a backpacker at heart just like you and the majority of the people that come through a hostel. I love to travel and I prefer to stay in nice, cheap and clean hostels that have atmosphere and bunch of cool folks to hang out with. So I know firsthand what backpackers need and I apply that into my own hostel. So when you come through my hostel in Tamarindo Costa Rica you will find “small” things that really make the difference for backpackers and travelers like you and me.

Since then we have opened another 2 locations: Pura Vida MINI Hostel – Manuel Antonio Costa Rica and Pura Vida MINI Hostel – Santa Teresa Costa Rica. However I have quickly realized that running 3 hostels in Costa Rica at the same time is pure madness and I needed to re-claim my Pura Vida (Pure Life) back! So I have sold off the other 2 properties and now I fully concentrate on running this amazing hostel in the center of Tamairndo Costa Rica. As we always find new and fun things to add or improve.

If you like to reach out to me directly please read my blog to find out where I am at and what I discovered. In the blog you will find TONS of very valuable information about Costa Rica as in my past 5 years I traveled majority of Costa Rica and surrounding countries, and I will be more than happy to give you valuable information about travel, culture, and the secret spots of Costa Rica that most ordinary tourists and backpackers do not find in the travel books.

Cheers Miriam, the Pura Vida MINI Hostel Tamarindo Costa Rica Team, and Simba.
